The 9th Defigena, a family-oriented sports event initiated by Verlingue and Génération, will take place on Sunday 9 June at Ile-Tudy (France). Now established as a key date in the event calendar, Defigena involves a 10-km run and a 5-km walk, as well as two 500m and 1,000m races for children.
The event was born from a joint initiative launched by Verlingue, Génération, the Gaétan Saleün association and Professor Claude Férec aimed at raising funds to support research against cystic fibrosis. The funds collected enable researchers to further the development of new treatments for this genetic disease that primarily affects the respiratory and digestive systems.
In France, some 6,000 people suffer from this pathology, with 200 newborns affected each year. Due to local genetic factors, the illness is unevenly spread among regions and Brittany has twice as many cases compared to the rest of the French population.
All donations go to Professor Claude Férec’s INSERM laboratory (Brest), which has become an international reference for research into genetic diseases, in particular cystic fibrosis. The aim is to pursue the commitment to combating the illness and increase patients’ life expectancy by investing in cutting-edge equipment and funding a PhD research position each year.
Runners, walkers and sports enthusiasts are all invited to get involved in the event with their families or friends and thereby support research into cystic fibrosis. Defigena’s objective is to continue to develop, as in 2018: some 1,700 people took part and nearly €35,000 in donations were collected.
Defigena also benefits from the active support of its sponsor Nolwenn Leroy and its partners in Finistère to develop and sustain the event. What’s more, the founding partners, Verlingue and Génération, donate an additional €10 per participant.
